I didn't know Ben directly, but it is a testament to his personality that through Nicola, the parkrun show and the Woodhouse Moor page I felt a real connection, and a real sense of loss at his passing. I remember his visit to Bradford parkrun - clapping him in at the finish in his straw hat and normal shoes as he hadn't intended to run. Even my daughter (who tolerates rather than supports my running) knew immediately who I was talking about when I mentioned him this morning - he was that memorable!
